Ukraine has accused Russia of blowing up the Nova Kakhovka dam near Kherson – containing about the same volume of water as Utah’s Great Salt Lake – with a number of significant repercussions for the local area and for Ukraine’s wider war effort. Water from the reservoir supplies the Crimean peninsula to the south, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, as well as the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant.
