Diplomats walked out on the Kremlin’s children's rights commissioner, who is charged with war crimes, as she spoke at a UN security council meeting. Maria Lvova-Belova, along with Russian president Vladimir Putin, was issued an arrest warrant by the international criminal court in March after being accused of illegally deporting children from occupied areas of Ukraine into Russia. Ukraine accuses Russia of having “stolen” more than 16,000 children since the start of its offensive more than a year ago. Russia says it is “saving” the children from combat zones. In a Russian television appearance with Putin in February, Lvova-Belova herself described “adopting” a 15-year-old child from Mariupol, the south-eastern Ukrainian city devastated and occupied by Russian forces.
