When reading a book on Norse mythology, the maritime archaeologist Dr John McCarthy spotted similarities between a supposedly mythical sea monster known as a hafgufa and an unusual whale feeding technique first officially documented by scientists in the 2010s. McCarthy and other researchers at Flinders University, Australia, went on to identify striking parallels between tread-water feeding and the behaviours of sea creatures described in several thousand-year-old manuscripts, including one dating to ancient Greece.
