Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has signed some of the harshest anti-LGBTQ laws in the world, the speaker of parliament said, defying international pressure, including from the United States which said it was "deeply troubled." DeLovie Kwagala, a queer photographer and activist from Uganda, says they felt force to flee to South Africa as their home country began implementing the hardline anti-LGBTQ+ bill known as the ‘kill the gays’ bill in March. Earlier this month, the country’s parliament passed a mostly unchanged version of one of the world’s strictest anti-LGBTQ+ bills after President Yoweri Museveni asked that certain provisions from the original legislation be toned down. Museveni, a vocal opponent of LGBTQ+ rights, applauded lawmakers for having “rejected the pressure from the imperialists''. The president now has until the end of May to either sign the legislation into law, return it to parliament for another revision, or veto it and inform the parliamentary speaker. The bill will, however, pass into law without the president’s assent if he returns it to parliament for a second time. #Uganda #LGBTQ | Ugandan activist speaks out as country passes anti-LGBTQ bill imposing death penalty

Unions claimed 3.5 million people turned out across the country – the authorities gave the figure as 1.1 million – for a largely peaceful national day of action to demand that the government drop the fiercely contested change.
